Nail Station Hoods

2006 IMC Table 403.3 requires that each nail station be provided with a hood exhausts and 50 cfm intermittent or 20 cfm continuous per station.

Footnotes #b and # I state that, Mechanical exhaust required and the recirculation of air from such spaces as permitted by Section 403.2.1 is prohibited (see Section 403.2.1, Items 1 and 3).

The required exhaust system shall capture the contaminants and odors at their source.

As of January 1st the 2005 version of the National Electrical Code has been adopted in Utah.

Fire Wall

Red,

I have a question for you.

1. I have a 36,800 SF building divided into two halves.

2. The west half is an M occupancy of Type V-B construction.

3. The east half is an A-2 occupancy of Type III-B construction.

4. The building is fire sprinkled throughout.

Are my conclusions correct as following?:

1. Under the 2003 IBC, a fire wall is to be used to separate a building of different construction types. (I can't find the reference for this but remember it being the case.)

2. Based on IBC Table 705.4, the fire wall required to separate the M and A-2 occupancies would have to be 3 hour since the callout for the M is greater than is called out for A occupanices, and that Footnote A to Table 705.4 cannot be applied to the conditions of my project.

Can you think of any way that this fire wall could be one- or two-hour construction under these conditions?

Washer Standpipes

IPC 406.3 The waste from an automatic clothes washer shall discharge through an air break into a standpipe in accordance with Section 802.4 or into a laundry sink. The trap and fixture drain for an automatic clothes washer standpipe shall be a minimum of 2 inches in diameter. The automatic clothes washer fixture drain shall connect to a branch drain or drainage stack a minimum of 3 inches in diameter.

This means the washer standpipes must drain into a vertical 3 inch stack if you are building an Apartment or Condo, care must be taken to make sure the framing members are 2x6 walls in these areas.

Multi-Family Floor/Ceiling Assemblies

2003 IBC Section 1207 requires a minimum STC=50, and a minimum IIC=50, at floor/ceiling assemblies separating dwelling units. In the past most floor/ceiling assemblies using wood I-joists required one layer of 5/8" type 'x' gyp brd attached to rc channels attached to the wood I-joist, mainly to achieve a one-hour rating as I understand it. In researching many different wood I-joist manufacturer's testing reports, I can only find one similar to this. It is TJI's ICC ES PFC-4354, Assembly B. However is shows under its Assembly B on page 21 of this report that two layers of 5/8" type 'x' gyp brd are required over rc channel to achieve a minimum IIC=50.

Anyone out there know of a valid report with one layer of 5/8" type 'x' gyp brd attached to rc channel attached to wood I-joists that meets the 2003 IBC 1207 requirements?

IEEC 802.3.6 Vestibule

IEEC 802.3.6 Vestibules.

A door that separates conditioned space from the exterior shall be protected with an enclosed vestibule, with all doors opening into and out of the vestibule equipped with self-closing devices. Vestibules shall be designed so that in passing through the vestibule it is not necessary for the interior and exterior doors to open at the same time.

The Energy code and Com-Check requires a vestibule be provided in spaces over 3000 square feet on the main entry, how are you addressing this in your City or County ?

ICC & IAPMO Talks

At the ICC Annual meeting of the members, President Frank Hodge announced that the ICC and IAPMO have taken the next step in their talks about working closer together in the future.
President Hodge provided informed ICC members that ICC and IAPMO have signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize talks that have been ongoing.
